Senior performer Aria Mabry would say that just like her Glinda character in “The Wizard of Oz,” she found she had the power to make a difference when she started attending LaGrange College, where over time she encountered people who helped her let go of her insecurities and love herself. To close out her last fall semester on the Hill, Mabry will present a theatrical showcase on Tuesday, Nov. 18, alongside guest actors, singers and dancers.
“This Senior Thesis production brings all of Aria's training into focus,” says Kim Barber Knoll, Fine & Performing Arts Chair and Theatre Arts Professor. “It showcases her versatility and range in all areas of performance.”
The collaborative event features operatic arias with surprise guests, a tap number with LC’s Musical Theatre dance teacher, Jaime Moore, scenes with student and faculty actors, a modern ballet piece, the LC Singers, members of the faculty choir and selections from musical theatre, pop and gospel genres with a live band.
“While my production has sentimental moments, I wanted it to be more about overcoming challenges and moving into the next phase of life,” Mabry says.
Her diverse portfolio of shows done on the Price Theater stage includes “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress,” “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” “Take It From The Top,” “Dancing at Lughnasa,” “I Love You Because,” “The Applicant,” “And The World Goes ’Round, and “Steel Magnolias.”
In addition to Theatre, Mabry, a proud Lettie Pate Whitehead scholar, also devotes her time to serving the campus and community. She currently holds roles as President of the Student Government Association, ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees, Student Ambassador, Servant Scholar, Phi Mu member, LC Miracle member, LC Singer, a Choral Scholar and youth leader at The First United Methodist Church of LaGrange and a volunteer at Teachable Moments Early Learning Center in LaGrange. Mabry also helped launch the Panther Talk podcast.
When seeking guidance, she says Professor Knoll and President Susanna L. Baxter have been her key mentors.
“I know that I can go to either one of them with anything and they will listen and say what I need to hear,” Mabry says. “They’ve shown me how to balance my professional life with my personal life and made sure I was taking care of myself.”
She says she credits her growth as a person and actor to LaGrange College.
“Because of this place, I will leave as a confident graduate, she says. “I feel more prepared than ever to move onto the next chapter.”
Tickets are available through Eventbrite which is a reservation-only site. The cost is $10 for adults and free for LC faculty, staff and students. Be certain to select the appropriate ticket when given the option. Cash and checks are accepted at the door. The production is not recommended for children.
